The Black Lips, a self-proclaimed “flower-punk” band from Atlanta, Georgia, rocked the Flex Vienna (2/6/2011). Heres a cite from Stephan Tringali in his concert review “Experience The Black Lips“, which brings the whole show exactly to the point:

They believe that you bleed and sweat and abuse yourself for rock and roll, and the most fucked-up band wins the prize. It appears that this notion is true. The most fucked-up band does come out on top and does receive glowing reviews all around — just because they play every show as if it’s their last. They hurl their music, nurtured by a shameless abandon and illegal substances, against the crowd and hope that something will stick. Something has in fact stuck: a message the press and audiences understand after only one show. The Black Lips and their combustible live act occupy a transient plateau from which they taunt, “See us now. Before we burn out and die.

The Rolling stone called them “one of the best live bands in America”, and there was everything involved what should be: flying loo paper, spraying champagne (because it was their last europe show), crowd surfing, and a stage invasion that the band could hardly play to the end

Some Black and White pics of two tours in the alps. We toured the Vergaldner Schneeberg (2588 m) from Gargellen and the Rauhe Kopf (3101 m) from the Biehlerhöhe. It was the first time i was able to test my new Splitboard (Voile RX Mojo) and i was absolutely amazed, no more carrying the heavy snowboard on the back with snowshoes. This year we decided to travel to Corsica, a french island in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s not far from Austria (Vorarlberg), i takes you five hours to go to Genua, there you’ll have to take the ferry for another five hours to Bastia (Corsica). All in all the Island is perfect, if you want to hike and swim at the same time. There are mountains up to 2700m (Monte Cinto), and everywhere you walk you’ll have lovely smell of the “macchia” in your nose.

Touring Vergaldner Schneeberg (2.588m)

Good weather, low avalanche risk, so let’s hit the chance to make the very last ski/snowboard – tour of the season. The plan is to climb the Vergaldner Schneeberg with its 2588 meters. We startet from Gargellen (1.423m). With a height difference of 1100 meters, this is the most challenging ski tour that I’ve gone so far. With a snowboard on the backpack through the deep snow is associated with considerable force, but the beautiful tour was worth every step. From Gargellen we walked on the road to Vergalden, and then we moved on into the Valzifenz- valley.

Over 6000 people in Vienna were demonstrating against Barbara Rosenkranz (freedom party, FPÖ), who is campaining for the presidental elejtions in Austria. The demonstration is also against rasicm, fasicm, xenophobia and for plurality, solidarity and moral courage. Bologna burns!

From the 11. – 14. March the Bologna summit is held in Vienna and Budapest where 47 science and education ministers celebrate the 10 years anniversary of the standardized University system. On the 11. of March thousends of students (Organizers: 10000 to 12000, Police: 3200) are protesting on the streets of Vienna. After a big demonstration the people split up in groups trying to block the streets to the celebration. The Austrian education secretary Karl hat to wait more then one hour, because some of her guests couden’t pass the blockades. For more information visit bolognaburns.org.

maybe the last winter impressions of the season

In Vienna spring arrives, so we decided to take the train to Vorarlberg which is seven hours away to go on the perhaps last snowboardtour of the season. Aim of the tour was the Drusentor (2343m). Because of the significant avalanche risk (step: III) we only went up to the Lindauer hut (1744m) and decided there that it is to risky to go further. Heavy wind and 10 to 20 cm new soft snow over older solidified increased the risk. To the hut it took us three hours from Latschau. More Pictures (especially with people on it) are stored on flickr.

Demonstration against the WKR ball (2010)

The WKR ist the “Wiener Korporations-Ring”, a roofing bond of fraternitys. While far right wing people from whole europe were celebrating in one of the representativest buildings of the Austrian republic, the antifascist demonstration was forbidden by the police. At the startin point of the demo, the police kettlet the whole demonstration. First there have been attempts to break through the police barrages, but then water cannons arrived and by temperatures beyond zero the tries stopped. The police let the people hours in the cold, after 3-4 hours people could go out, in exchange of their personal data.

Into the Wild

Some pictures of a Ski- Snowboardtour in Vorarlberg (Austria). Goal of the tour was the summit “Matona” (1998m) in the Bregenzerwald. The avalanche risk was II up to 2000m (good conditions) and the weather was nice. The Snow conditions were better than expected.
